Four police officers have been suspended after a statement by Limon Mia, 34, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Rajshahi Metropolitan Session Judge’s son Tawsif Rahman, 17, and the attempted murder of his mother Tasmin Nahar Lucy, 44, went viral on social media while he was in police custody.
On Saturday afternoon, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian ordered the temporary suspension.
The officers were stationed at Rajpara police station and have since been withdrawn from the station and attached to the RMP Police Lines.
The suspended officers are Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Shahadat, Constable Abdus Sabur, Mahfuzar Rahman, and Mithu Sardar.
RMP spokesperson Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Gaziur Rahman confirmed the suspensions, saying that they were due to negligence in carrying out their duties.
He added: “The number of officers facing action may increase, possibly even double. An inquiry is ongoing to determine who neglected their responsibilities. Further action will follow based on the findings.”
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in a rented flat in the Dabtola area of Rajshahi, where ninth-grade student Tawsif was killed. Judge Abdur Rahman’s wife, Tasmin Nahar Lucy, was injured in the attack, as was the assailant during the struggle.
Limon Mia was taken into police custody after being admitted to the hospital and spoke briefly in front of a television camera. The video later went viral on social media.
A miscellaneous case has been filed in the Rajshahi court regarding the incident.
Due to the accused’s statement being broadcast, the court summoned RMP Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian on Saturday, instructing him to appear in person and provide an explanation by Wednesday. The court also granted five days’ remand for the accused, Limon Mia.
