At least four people were killed when a sand-laden truck overturned and crushed them at Jhalmalia banana market in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi on Thursday morning.
The accident occurred around 8am, leaving several others injured.
The deceased were identified as Siam, son of Shahin Ali of Kafuria village in Natore Sadar upazila; Munker Pramanik, son of Akkel Pramanik of Paikpara village; Sentu, son of Sayom Uddin of Salaingor village in Bagatipara upazila of Natore; and Islam Uddin, son of the late Mahatab Ali of Askarpur village in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi.
Confirming the incident, Rajshahi district police spokesperson Additional Superintendent of Police Sabina Yasmin said the banana market is located beside the Rajshahi–Natore highway at Jhalmalia.
She said a sand-laden dump truck heading towards Natore overturned in the morning due to dense fog, killing four people on the spot.
One of the bodies was taken home by family members, while police recovered the remaining three from the scene, she added, noting that the victims were believed to be banana traders.
Meanwhile, one injured person was initially taken to the Puthia Upazila Health Complex and later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
The RMCH police outpost said the injured person has been admitted to the hospital, where treatment is ongoing.
