The Appellate Division has denied bail to Tamanna Jasmine Riva, president of the Eden College unit of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League. Alongside, the court has fixed a new date for the bail hearing after three months.

On Monday, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by senior Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, issued the order.

During the hearing, the state side informed the Appellate Division that the case against Riva is under investigation by the Detective Branch (DB). In this situation, they argued, granting bail would not be appropriate.

Barrister Mozakker appeared in court on behalf of Riva.

According to available information, Tamanna Jasmine Riva was a student of the Marketing Department of Eden College in the 2009–10 academic session. She had been living in the Eden College dormitory for over a decade. On December 15 last year, the Detective Branch (DB) arrested her from Vatara on allegations of conducting political activities.

The following day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman’s court granted a two-day remand for Riva in a murder attempt case filed at Shahbagh Police Station.

During the quota reform movement, students of Eden Mohila College also joined the protests. At that time, Riva faced allegations of torturing general students.

After July 15, 2024, when the movement intensified, the students of Eden also formed resistance against the leaders of the Chhatra League. Unable to withstand the pressure, Riva fled and went into hiding.
