Police arrested BM Shahiduzzaman Shahid, 45, former municipal councillor and convener of Keshabpur Upazila Jubo League in Jessore yesterday night.
He was arrested from Baliadanga Sarbojonin Debalaya area in Keshabpur municipality.
The arrested Shahiduzzaman Shahid, a resident of Altapol village, is a former councillor of Ward No. 5 under Keshabpur municipality.
According to media reports, some residents initially detained Shahiduzzaman Shahid in Debalaya area and later informed Keshabpur Police. On the information, police arrived at the scene and took him to the station.
Sources said that Shahiduzzaman had been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League government. On Monday, he returned to his area and was crossing the Harihar River bridge near Baliadanga Debalaya during evening prayers. Locals recognized him, chased him, and reportedly beat him before handing him over to Keshabpur police.
Residents alleged that while Shahiduzzaman had physically stayed away from the area, he remained active on Facebook, posting in support of the Hasina-led government.
The duty officer of Keshabpur Police Station confirmed the arrest of Shahiduzzaman Shahid.
