Police have arrested a total of 86 people, including 59 leaders and activists of the Awami League, in Dinajpur over the past 12 hours.
The detainees were sent to jail after they were produced before the court, according to a statement issued by the Media Cell of the Dinajpur Superintendent of Police today.
The statement further said that police from 13 police stations across the district conducted operations between midnight on Monday and noon on Tuesday and arrested 59 Awami League leaders and activists, who had been on the run in connection with multiple cases filed over alleged acts of sabotage. In addition, 27 individuals were arrested in connection with other criminal cases, bringing the total number of arrests to 86.
The police claimed that the arrested Awami League leaders and activists were trying to create instability and cause damage to public property in the country in connection with the 13 November lockdown programme announced by Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina, now staying in India. They were allegedly engaged in acts of sabotage to destabilize the country.
Dinajpur Court Police Inspector Md. Aminul Islam stated that the detainees were produced before the court this afternoon and the court sent them to jail.
