The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has instructed airport authorities across the country, including Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, to implement special security measures ahead of the banned Awami League’s announced “Dhaka lockdown” program scheduled for Thursday.
A letter containing the directive was issued from the CAAB headquarters on Tuesday and sent to all airports nationwide.
Following the recent fire incident at the cargo house of Shahjalal International Airport, security measures at airports have already been strengthened. The latest directive adds further layers of precaution.
According to the letter, round-the-clock surveillance must be ensured at all airports through CCTV monitoring.
In addition, patrol activities have been increased and monitoring systems reinforced. Necessary preparations have also been made to enable immediate response to any possible untoward situation.
The directive further instructs the deployment of the maximum number of security personnel at all airports. Fire surveillance and emergency response activities have also been intensified to ensure swift action in case of emergencies.
Muhammad Kawsar Mahmud, assistant director (Public Relations) of CAAB, told Dhaka Tribune: “Ensuring passengers’ safety is our highest priority. We have urged everyone to remain vigilant and to work in coordination with relevant security agencies. Letters have been sent from the CAAB headquarters to all airports, instructing them to take necessary measures.”
Notably, tension has been rising over the banned Awami League’s “Dhaka lockdown” program in recent days. Incidents of arson and crude bomb (cocktail) explosions have already been reported, prompting law enforcement agencies to take extensive preparations to prevent possible acts of sabotage or unrest on the day of the program.
