The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division has stayed the High Court’s bail order to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five cases, including the one filed over the murder of garment worker Minarul Islam during the anti-discrimination student movement last year.
The order was issued on Wednesday by the Chamber Judge Court of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Md Rezaul Haque, following a hearing on the state’s appeal against the High Court’s decision.
Additional Attorney General Barrister Aneek R Haque represented the state, while Barrister Sara Hossain appeared for Ivy.
Earlier, on Sunday, the High Court granted bail to Selina Hayat Ivy in five cases, including the Minarul murder case. The bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Sagir Hossain delivered the verdict, making the previously issued rule absolute.
Subsequently, the state filed an appeal seeking suspension of that order.
According to the case documents, on the evening of July 20, 2024, during the ongoing anti-discrimination student movement, garment worker Minarul Islam was shot in the Adamjee area. He was taken to the 300-bed Narayanganj Hospital in Khanpur, where doctors declared him dead. He was buried in his village the next day.
On September 23, Minarul’s brother Nazmul Haque filed a murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station, naming 132 people including Sheikh Hasina and listing around 300 unidentified individuals as accused. Selina Hayat Ivy was named as the 12th accused in the case, and several more cases were later filed against her.
Notably, on May 9, former mayor Ivy was arrested at her home in Paschim Deovog, Narayanganj, in connection with one of the murder cases. The court sent her to jail the same day. Later, on May 27, following a two-day remand in the Minarul murder case, the court again ordered her detention.
Subsequently, her bail plea was rejected by the court. Later, Ivy filed a petition with the High Court, which issued a rule in her favor before eventually granting her bail—now suspended by the Appellate Division.
