Rajshahi Metropolitan Judge Abdur Rahman has filed a case following the murder of his son, Tawsif Rahman, also known as Suman, 16.
On Friday afternoon, the judge signed the case statement and then took his son’s body to his ancestral home in Jamalpur. The Rajpara police station later recorded the case.
Gaziur Rahman, spokesperson for the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), confirmed the matter on Friday afternoon, saying: “The judge himself has filed the case as the complainant. The only accused is Limon Mia, 34. He has been shown as arrested and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital under police custody. After his treatment, he will be sent to jail through the court.”
Limon Mia is from Bhabaniganj village in Madanerpara, Phulchari upazila, Gaibandha. His father, SM Solaiman Sheikh, is a former Union Parishad member and the organizational secretary of Phulchari Upazila BNP.
Limon had served in the army as a soldier but lost his job in 2018. Following this, he became addicted to drugs. He married a few years ago, but the marriage did not last. Limon had a prior acquaintance with Judge Abdur Rahman’s wife, Tasmin Nahar Lucy, 44, and had taken money from her.
Police suspect that the attack was motivated by a financial dispute with the judge’s wife. Limon allegedly continued to harass and blackmail her, even threatening her life. Tasmina filed a general diary (GD) on the matter on November 6 at Jalalabad police station in Sylhet, while staying at her daughter’s home.
Judge Abdur Rahman came to Rajshahi nearly a year ago as a labour court judge. Last month, he was appointed as the metropolitan sessions judge. Upon arriving in Rajshahi, he rented a house in the Dabtola area, where he lived with his wife and only son, Tawsif.
On Thursday, around 2:30pm, Limon visited their residence. Tawsif was stabbed to death during the attack there. Tasmin Nahar was also injured and admitted to hospital, while the assailant was hurt during the struggle. All three were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital by other residents of the building, where Tawsif was declared dead.
On Friday morning, Tawsif’s body underwent a post-mortem at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. The examination was conducted by Associate Professor Dr Kafil Uddin, head of the Forensic Medicine Department, and Lecturer Sarmin Sobhan Kaberi. After the post-mortem, Judge Abdur Rahman went inside the morgue to see his son’s body, breaking down in tears.
According to Dr Kafil Uddin, Tawsif had multiple sharp and blunt force injuries to his right thigh, right leg, and arm, which severed blood vessels, causing excessive bleeding. Internal bleeding was also present. The doctors concluded that the excessive blood loss was the cause of death.
The police report noted marks around Tawsif’s neck, which the forensic doctors said could have been caused by soft cloth strangulation, but this was not the primary cause of death. The stabbing and attempted strangulation occurred simultaneously, the doctors added.
After the post-mortem, members of the Quantum Foundation’s Rajshahi Centre performed the funeral rites at the hospital. The body was then transported in the foundation’s refrigerated ambulance. Tawsif was a ninth-grade student at Rajshahi Government Laboratory School.
