Two people have been detained in connection with the recovery of 26 dismembered body parts of raw-material trader Ashraful Haque in the capital. Police have initially stated that the murder took place due to an extramarital affair.
According to police sources, at a house in Donia, Shanir Akhra of Kadamtali, Dhaka, Shamina and the victim’s friend Jarez Mia killed Rangpur businessman Ashraful Haque and, two days later, dismembered the body in the bathroom. Jarez Mia has been detained by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB), and Shamina by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
RAB and DB confirmed on Friday that the two had been detained.
An officer of the Metropolitan DB said: “Through prior acquaintance, Shamina developed an extramarital relationship with Rangpur businessman Ashraful Haque. Later, she also became involved in an extramarital relationship with Ashraful’s friend, Jarez Mia. This led to tension among them.”
He added that at one point, in a house in the Kadamtali area, Shamina and Jarez Mia killed Ashraful Haque and kept the body there. Two days later, on Thursday, they placed the remains in two barrels, transported them by CNG, and left them near the water pump area beside the National Eidgah ground in Shahbagh before fleeing.
The officer also stated that detailed information on the incident would be presented at a press conference on Saturday.
Earlier, on Thursday evening, police from Shahbagh Police Station recovered 26 body parts inside two blue barrels left on the footpath beside the water-pump area near the National Eidgah ground. Initially, the identity could not be determined, but law enforcement later confirmed it to be Ashraful Haque of Badarganj, Rangpur through fingerprint analysis.
Meanwhile, on Friday afternoon, the post-mortem examination of the 26 body parts was completed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.
The victim’s sister, Anjira Begum, said that Ashraful ran a raw-materials business in the village. He lived there with his wife Lucky Begum and their two children. Last Tuesday, Ashraful travelled to Dhaka with his friend Jarez Mia. The family also knew that Ashraful was owed money by several people, including some in Narayanganj, due to his business and other dealings.
On Friday, Anjira Begum filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station. In the case, Ashraful’s friend Jarez Mia was named the prime accused.
