Winter has begun to set in across Srimangal, Moulvibazar, which on Thursday recorded the lowest temperature in the country — 12.5°C between 6am and 9am.

Srimangal Weather Observatory’s Dilip Vaishnav confirmed the informationa.

Surrounded by tea gardens, haors and hills, the district has been experiencing dense fog, heavy dew and biting cold since early morning.

The chill intensifies after sunset, and demand for warm clothes has surged, particularly in the Srimangal Station area, home to many tea workers.

However, residents said the cold feels slightly less severe once the morning fog lifts and sunlight breaks through.

Meanwhile, the joy of Nobanno (Bengali harvest celebration) has spread across the district with the start of the aman paddy harvest. The aroma of freshly cut paddy and an abundance of winter cakes have created a festive atmosphere in rural towns. As evening falls, makeshift pitha stalls draw crowds in the city.

Despite the cold, daily wage earners — including tea garden workers, van drivers and rickshaw pullers — continue heading out from early morning. “Once the sun comes out, it gets easier to work,” said rickshaw puller Osman and farmer Akram Ali.
