Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, stated that India is reviewing Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, convicted in the July massacre case, but the process will begin with former home minister and sentenced accused Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

“The process will begin with Kamal,” he said on Friday in a post on his verified Facebook account.

In his statement, Shafiqul Alam wrote that he believes Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and other Awami League leaders accused in the July events will eventually face the courts of Bangladesh.

He noted that India is already examining the request for Hasina’s extradition.

The press secretary further said: “We are aware that Hasina has strong supporters. Nevertheless, I am confident that ‘Dhaka’s Butcher’ Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, will soon be extradited to Bangladesh. As attention continues to focus on the alleged crimes committed during Hasina’s nearly 16-year rule, Kamal’s role in the massacre and enforced disappearances is likely to attract increased international media attention.”

Shafiqul Alam added that no matter how much money Kamal or other Awami League leaders spend, evading accountability will not last forever.

He emphasized that if the nation remains resolute in pursuing justice for the victims of the July massacre and the human rights violations during Hasina’s administration, avoiding the consequences will become increasingly difficult over time.
