A woman has allegedly been beaten and stripped by her rivals in Jhenaidah. The incident took place in the Purbo Para area of Dogachi village under Sadar upazila on Friday morning.

The victim, Hasna Ara, wife of Nazmul Biswas of the same village, is currently undergoing treatment at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital.

Relatives of the victim said the supporters of Nazrul Islam and Sirajul Islam of Dogachi village became involved in a longstanding dispute over establishing supremacy in the area. A clash had also taken place between the two groups a few days earlier.

Sharmin Akhter, a reserved woman UP Member of Dogachi Union Parishad, said Hasna Ara and her cousin’s sister-in-law, Akhi Khatun, went for a walk in the village in the morning. When they reached the Hajam Bari mosque area, 10 to 15 supporters of Sirajul Biswas, including Liton, Babul, Rashid, Saiful, Lutfur, Imon and Mustak, allegedly intercepted them.

Akhi managed to flee, but the attackers reportedly beat Hasna Ara mercilessly, took off her clothes and snatched her gold chain, earrings and mobile phone. Police later rescued and took her to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital.

Despite attempts over mobile phone, Sirajul Biswas could not be reached for his comment in this regard.

Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun said an incident of assault on a woman had occurred and that legal action would be taken upon receipt of a formal complaint.
