BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health complications have worsened, and she remains under close observation in the CCU at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
The hospital premises saw a surge of party leaders and activists early Saturday, amid rising concern over her condition.
Senior BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, reached the hospital around 11:45pm on Friday.
Mirza Fakhrul described her condition as critical and urged the nation to pray for her recovery. Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas arrived around 2am, later telling reporters that although Khaleda Zia was conscious, her condition remained unstable.
Law Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul also visited the hospital at midnight. In a Facebook post after his visit, he wrote that her condition was “not good at all” and urged everyone to pray for her. Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haider also visited.
Large numbers of journalists gathered at the hospital from Friday night, providing continuous updates on her medical condition and statements from party leaders and doctors.
Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus called on the nation to pray for the three-time former prime minister, saying the government would ensure there is no shortage in her treatment.
BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, in a Facebook post, thanked the chief adviser for his guidance and concern, noting that Dr Yunus has been regularly monitoring her condition.
Amid the growing crowds, the BNP appealed to leaders and activists not to gather at the hospital.
Khaleda Zia was admitted on November 23 and is under the care of specialist Prof Shahabuddin Talukder. Doctors have confirmed infections in both her lungs and heart.
