BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia remains in a critical condition at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where she has been admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) under the supervision of both local and foreign specialists, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office, he said: “As you all know, the undisputed leader of Bangladesh and the Mother of Democracy, Begum Khaleda Zia, has been in Evercare Hospital for several days in a serious health condition.”
Amid his mother’s deteriorating condition, BNP’s acting Chairman Tarique Rahman posted on Facebook: “During such a crisis, like any son, I deeply long for my mother’s affection and presence. But, unlike others, the opportunity to make an independent decision in this regard is neither open nor entirely within my control.”
When asked about the post, Mirza Fakhrul said: “Take his post as his statement. No further explanation is required.”
The 80-year-old former prime minister has long been suffering from cardiac complications, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney problems. She was taken to Evercare Hospital on November 23 for routine tests, where doctors detected a chest infection and decided to admit her. A medical board led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder has since been overseeing her treatment. Over the past two days, her condition further deteriorated, prompting the BNP to organize special prayers across the country on Friday.
At the press conference, Mirza Fakhrul added: “A medical board comprising specialists from Bangladesh, Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US, and London Clinic has been supervising her care. Last night, the board met for two and a half hours and concluded that she needs to be taken abroad for further treatment.”
He said preparations were underway regarding visas, communication with potential destinations, and arrangements for an air ambulance. “The groundwork is being done so decisions can be made quickly if needed,” he added.
“However, at this moment, she is not physically fit to be taken abroad. Once her condition stabilises, the possibility will be reconsidered.”
Calling for restraint, Mirza Fakhrul urged BNP supporters and the public not to crowd the hospital. “Her illness has made everyone anxious, and many are gathering at the hospital. This is causing difficulties for doctors and disrupting services for other patients. Please refrain from gathering there. We will keep everyone updated.”
Earlier, on Saturday afternoon, Tarique Rahman’s adviser and party spokesperson, Mahedi Amin, wrote on Facebook that preparations were underway to take Khaleda Zia abroad. He said arrangements were being made to fly her to London for advanced treatment once her condition improves, including organising a specially equipped air ambulance.
Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, BNP Chairperson’s Press Wing member Shamsuddin Didar said: “The medical board has informed us that Madam remains in a critical state in the CCU. There is no confirmed improvement or deterioration. She is under constant monitoring, and all necessary treatment is being provided.”
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus have expressed deep concern over her condition and urged the nation to pray for her recovery. The pro-BNP teachers’ forum at Dhaka University, Sada Dal, held a prayer session at the university mosque yesterday, while a special prayer was also organised at the capital’s Kali Temple by Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Front.
Tarique Rahman’s post sparks new speculation
Following Tarique Rahman’s Facebook post, renewed speculation has emerged about whether he intends or is able to return to Bangladesh. His comment that “the opportunity to make an independent decision is neither open nor entirely within my control” has triggered debate among political observers.
Analysts suggest that the statement hints that the decision about his return is influenced by factors beyond his personal choice. Some have questioned whether any implicit barriers exist regarding his repatriation.
However, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam dismissed such concerns on Facebook, writing: “There is no restriction or objection from the government regarding Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh.”
He added that Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has already expressed deep concern over Khaleda Zia’s health and urged the public to pray for her recovery.
