Mobile phone traders formed a human chain in the capital’s Karwan Bazar on Sunday, demanding reforms to the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR), an end to what they allege is a monopolistic syndicate, and allowing open import of mobile phones.

The program began around 9am under the banner of Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB). Protesters took position holding banners and festoons highlighting their demands.

The traders said they want to operate their businesses by paying VAT, but called for reducing the VAT rate and ensuring a legal and fair business environment.

One trader said: “About 25,000 traders work in the unofficial or grey market. If business is suddenly stopped, where will we go? We are not against paying taxes; we want to do business by paying VAT and tax.”

The MBCB earlier announced that all mobile phone shops across the country, including Dhaka, would remain closed from Sunday.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the organisation said traders would form a peaceful human chain at 10am in the Karwan Bazar–Panthapath area to demand an end to the alleged syndicate, a fair tax structure, and permission for open import of mobile phones. Traders in various districts and divisional cities also announced similar programs.
