The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has once again failed to submit the investigation report into the murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, marking the 122nd consecutive extension of the deadline.

The report was scheduled to be submitted to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Sunday.

However, as the PBI has yet to complete the investigation, the report was not filed. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam later set January 5 as the new submission date.

Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam Russell of the General Registration Branch at Mirpur Model Police Station confirmed the development.

On November 4, 2024 — more than a decade after the murders — the responsibility for the investigation was shifted from RAB to the PBI, which then began a fresh probe.

Sagar Sarowar, news editor at Maasranga TV, and his wife, ATN Bangla senior correspondent Meherun Runi, were killed on February 11, 2012, in their rented apartment in the capital’s West Rajabazar.

Runi’s brother, Nausher Alam, later filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
