The army and police on Saturday rescued top-listed criminal Buniya Sohel, 40, an accused in 38 cases, in an injured state from Geneva Camp in the capital’s Mohammadpur. He was later shown arrested, Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-In-Charge (OC) Kazi Rafiq told the media.

Soon after the rescue, the army detained two of his associates—Nayan, 30, and Rabbi, 28—with two US-made pistols and six rounds of ammunition.

According to army sources, around 7pm information reached the Sher-e-Bangla Army Camp that locals at Geneva Camp were beating Sohel, known as a top Mohammadpur criminal. Three army patrol teams rushed to the spot, rescued him in severely injured condition and admitted him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

Following the rescue, Nayan and Rabbi were seen moving suspiciously around Suhrawardy Hospital and the Sher-e-Bangla Army Camp. Army personnel identified and detained them.

Based on information provided by the detainees, six army patrol teams later conducted separate raids in different parts of Mohammadpur around 1 a.m., recovering two US-made 7.65 mm pistols and six rounds of ammunition.

A responsible officer of the 46 Independent Infantry Brigade said nearly 40 cases have been filed against Sohel in various police stations across Dhaka. Over the past year, his gang has been linked to seven to eight killings in parts of Mohammadpur.

He said Sohel had been attacked and injured by a rival group, while his two associates were preparing to retaliate by collecting firearms when the army intercepted them.

The officer added that Sohel, now under police guard at the hospital, has been officially shown arrested, while the two detainees and the recovered weapons have been handed over to Mohammadpur Police Station for legal action.
