Bangladesh Bank will release a new Tk500 note featuring a redesigned look from Thursday, December 4.
Part of the “Historical and Archaeological Architecture of Bangladesh” series, the note will first be issued at the bank’s Motijheel office, with other branches across the country to follow, the central bank said in a press release on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Bank has already introduced new notes of 1000, 100, 50, and 20 takas in the same series. The Tk500 note, signed by Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur, is the latest addition to the currency in circulation.
Design features
Measuring 152 mm × 65 mm, the new note is predominantly green. The front showcases the Central Shaheed Minar with the national flower Shapla in the background, while the reverse features the Bangladesh Supreme Court building. Its watermark includes the face of the Royal Bengal Tiger, the numeral “500,” and Bangladesh Bank’s monogram.
Security features
The note includes 10 new security enhancements. The ‘500’ printed on the right changes colour from green to blue when tilted. A red-golden twisted security thread reveals “500 Taka” when held against light.
Accessibility features
Five raised circles assist the visually impaired, while intaglio printing creates a tactile feel in some areas. Under UV light, the Shapla and colored paper fibers glow, and the see-through “500” becomes fully visible when held to light.
Continued validity of old notes
Bangladesh Bank confirmed that all existing paper notes and coins will remain valid even after the new note enters circulation.
For collectors, a specimen 500 taka note has also been issued and can be obtained from the Currency Museum at Mirpur.
