A mother dog in Ishurdi upazila of Pabna lost all eight of her newborn puppies on Monday after they were thrown into a pond and killed, leaving locals shocked and demanding action.
The accused, Hasnur Rahman Noyon, an officer of the Small Farmers Development Foundation, and his wife Nishi Rahman, live in government quarters on the Upazila Parishad campus. According to residents, the puppies were born in the courtyard of the official’s residence about a week ago and often barked near the house, which reportedly upset the couple.
On Monday, the puppies were thrown into a pond. Locals later retrieved their bodies, while the mother dog sat beside them, wailing. The puppies were buried shortly after.
Hasnur Rahman Noyon told reporters: “My wife had asked to remove the puppies for the safety of our children. I did not intend for them to be killed. I feel ashamed and sorry for this incident.”
Ishurdi Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moniruzzaman called the act “extremely inhumane and cruel” and said the official had been ordered to vacate the government quarters within a day. The Department of Livestock will provide care for the grieving mother dog.
