Members of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested journalist Shawkat Mahmud.
The DB team arrested him from his residence in the Malibagh area of the capital, saidMd Talebur Rahman, DMP deputy commissioner (Media and Public Relations).
The DB team brought Mahmud from his Malibagh residence in the afternoon but added that he had no information on whether the arrest was linked to any specific case.
Shawkat Mahmud is a former president of the National Press Club and the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ). In April this year, he became general secretary of the newly launched political party Janata Party Bangladesh, with film actor Ilias Kanchan as chairman.
Mahmud was previously a vice chairman of the BNP and was expelled from all party positions on March 21, 2023.
