A new political alliance, the “Democratic Reform Alliance,” has been launched, comprising the National Citizen Party (NCP), Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), and the Rastro Songskar Andolon (State Reform Movement). The alliance aims to fulfil the aspirations for change following the July mass uprising and to prevent Bangladesh from returning to old-style politics.
NCP convener Nahid Islam announced the formation of the alliance at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium on Sunday. AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju and State Reform Movement President Hasnat Kaiyum were also present.
Speaking at the conference, Nahid said: “The announced ‘Democratic Reform Alliance’ is not merely an electoral coalition; it is a political alliance focused on national dignity and economic freedom. We will contest the upcoming national elections together under one symbol. Discussions are ongoing with several other political forces and parties.”
He added: “Anyone who thinks they can win the next election through sheer force or by using religion as a tool will not succeed.”
AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju said: “Our expectations after the uprising were not fulfilled. The expectations of the youth were not met, and the activities of newcomers have faced criticism. In this situation, we are announcing a new beginning. In line with the pledges and hopes of the July uprising, our three parties have united to offer Bangladesh a new political order.”
He also said: “Old politics could not topple fascism. It was the new generation that challenged and defeated it.”
State Reform Movement President Hasnat Kaiyum added: “We are starting with three parties, but we believe the spirit of the uprising and the aspiration for change extend beyond them.”
