After being confined in his office since 2:30pm, Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed left his office at the secretariat around 8pm on Wednesday with police assistance.

Sources said that earlier, the protesting employees had been summoned to his office, where he promised to implement their demands by Thursday.

The employees, however, rejected the promise and insisted that the demands be met by Wednesday, continuing their protest. Eventually, the finance adviser exited the secretariat with police support. It was reported that the protesting employees did not obstruct him while leaving.

Since early afternoon on Wednesday, groups of employees from different ministries had gathered on the fourth floor of Block 11, outside the office of the adviser.

Sources said that under the leadership of Badiul Kabir, president of a faction of the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers-Employees Joint Council, the employees confined the adviser in his office.

Badiul Kabir told Dhaka Tribune that secretariat employees have long demanded various allowances.

“Today (Wednesday), they said they would not leave their positions until the government issues a gazette regarding these demands,” he said.
