A clinic has been sealed off in Lohagara upazila of Narail following a serious allegation that surgical gauze was left inside a patient’s abdomen during the Cesarean section.

Upazila Health Department has sealed off the Operation Theatre of Morsheda Surgical Clinic at the C&B intersection and ordered the suspension of all activities of the clinic until further notice.

A drive was carried out at the clinic under the leadership of Lohagara Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Abul Hasnat on Wednesday.

EPI Project Chief Coordinator Prashanta Ghosh, administrative officials, and Raju Ahmed Bappi, General Secretary of the Lohagara Upazila Clinic and Diagnostic Owners Association, were also present.

Dr. Abul Hasnat said that during the drive, various irregularities were found at the clinic, including the expiry of licence in June 2022, the absence of full-time doctors and diploma-holding nurses, and multiple administrative mismanagement issues.

In addition, the accused doctor has been instructed to refrain from all kinds of surgical procedures until further notice.

According to the written complaint, Sumy Khanam, the speech-impaired wife of Shawkat Molla from South Pangkhar Char village of Itna Union, was admitted to Morsheda Surgical Clinic  on November 22 as she was pregnant.

Dr Newaz Morshed, Dr Al Khadija Shampa, and others associated with the clinicdecided on a Cesarean section for Tk13,000. Although a baby girl was delivered through the operation, Sumy’s stomach later began to swell, and her condition worsened.

When the family informed the doctors, they claimed it was gastric pain and discharged her on November 27.

However, her condition deteriorated further, and on December 4, following the advice of a specialist, Sumy was taken to Khulna Gazi Medical College Hospital. There, tests revealed that during the C-section, the patient’s intestine had been cut, and the doctors knowingly pressed gauze into the wound and stitched it up. This caused severe infection and complications in the abdomen.

On December 9, Sumy’s cousin and former chief organizer of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Narail district, Kazi Yazur Rahman Babu, filed a written complaint with the Narail Civil Surgeon’s office regarding the incident.
