The fire at Shah Alam Chemical, a chemical warehouse in Mirpur, has been fully brought under control.
According to Fire Service Director (Operation and Maintenance) Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, the blaze was tamed at 2:20pm on Wednesday, nearly 27 hours after it broke out.
Speaking at a press briefing around 4:30pm, he said: “We began our firefighting operations at 11:40am on Tuesday. The fire in the garments section was brought under control yesterday (Tuesday), while the fire in the chemical warehouse was declared controlled at 2:20pm today (Wednesday).”
He further said: “The warehouse contained around six to seven types of chemical substances. We have yet to fully assess their composition as the warehouse was packed with chemicals. We are removing the materials step by step, flattening the fire floor with water in a systematic manner, which is a time-consuming process.”
Earlier, the fire had originated around 11:30am on Tuesday at the chemical warehouse in the Shialbari area of Mirpur’s Rupnagar Residential Zone before spreading to an adjacent garment factory.
So far, 16 bodies have been recovered, while several others remain missing, according to family members.
