Law enforcement agencies have tightened security on various roads across the capital to prevent any untoward incidents, with members of the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and the army taking alert positions at key points.

The move followed the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot and later died, after which some agitated people carried out attacks, vandalism, and arson at several establishments in the capital on Thursday. Since the incidents, a largely tense situation has been prevailing across Dhaka.

The situation was observed on Friday afternoon during visits to the Dhanmondi, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, and Shahbagh areas.

Security was tightened citywide following Thursday night’s attacks, vandalism, and arson at the offices of the English daily The Daily Star in Farmgate, the daily Prothom Alo in Karwan Bazar, and the Chhayanaut building in the Dhanmondi area.

While an alert presence of law enforcement personnel was seen around Chhayanaut, the presence of law enforcement members was not as noticeable in the Dhanmondi 32 area or in Shahbagh.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Khalilur Rahman of Dhanmondi Police Station, who was on security duty in front of Chhayanaut, said, “We have been on duty here since morning. No kind of untoward incident has taken place today.”

Law enforcement personnel deployed at various locations in the capital said they are prepared to handle any kind of unexpected situation.

In the afternoon, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam visited the damaged buildings of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.

Osman Hadi was shot in the head in the capital’s Purana Paltan area on December 12. After receiving treatment in the country, he was taken to Singapore by air ambulance on December 15. News arrived Thursday night that he had died while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
