A Dhaka court has granted a second four-day remand for the wife, brother-in-law, and a female friend of Faisal Karim Masud (alias Rahul Daud), the prime suspect in the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
On Saturday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Siddique Azad passed the order after a hearing.
The remanded suspects are Faisal’s wife, Saheda Parvin Samia, his brother-in-law, Wahid Ahmed Shipu, and his friend, Maria Akter Lima. Meanwhile, the court ordered that rent-a-car businessman Md Nuruzzaman Nomani (alias Uzzal) be sent to jail following the completion of his previous remand.
Court sources stated that the investigating officer, DB Inspector Faisal Ahmed, had sought a seven-day remand for the suspects. Previously, on Monday, they had been placed on a five-day remand. State Prosecutor Advocate Shamsuddoha Suman argued in favor of the petition.
According to investigators, on December 12, two assailants on a motorcycle shot Sharif Osman Hadi in the Paltan area while he was returning from election campaigning. He later passed away while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Initially filed as an attempted murder case, it has now been converted into a regular murder case under relevant sections of the Penal Code following his death.
The remand application noted that further interrogation is necessary to uncover the motive behind the killing, identify the financiers, and arrest the absconding suspects.
The case statement mentions that Hadi was an active independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. He became a target of a group due to his staunch anti-fascist stance and demands to ban the Awami League.
Investigators believe the assassination was part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to sabotage the upcoming election and instill fear among candidates. Based on CCTV footage and evidence, the involvement of the prime suspect, Faisal, has been confirmed. The Detective Branch (DB) hopes to extract crucial information regarding the masterminds from the suspects currently in custody.
Earlier, on Sunday, Inqilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed the initial case at Paltan police station. Following Hadi’s death, additional sections of the Penal Code related to murder have been added to the case.
