Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander G Khozin on Monday urged both Bangladesh and India to find a way to prevent further escalation of ongoing tensions between the two countries.
Speaking at a press conference at the Russian Embassy in Dhaka, Khozin said a conducive environment must be created ahead of Bangladesh’s upcoming national election and that reducing tensions with India is essential. “The sooner this happens, the better,” he added.
He emphasized that Russia does not wish to interfere in the bilateral relations of Bangladesh and India, but believes it would be wise to ensure that tensions do not escalate beyond their current level.
Khozin stressed that relations should be based on mutual trust and confidence.
The ambassador also welcomed the Election Commission’s announcement of the election schedule, expressing hope that the polls would be held on time. Regarding the possibility of sending Russian observers, he said Russia is in contact with the Election Commission and is awaiting an official invitation.
