The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) has arrested nine more people in connection with the attack and arson at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.

A total of 28 individuals have been arrested to date.

Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), announced the arrests at around 11:15am on Tuesday. He said that details will be announced later.

Police said they had identified 31 individuals in connection with the attacks, vandalism, looting and arson at the offices of the two leading dailies as of Monday.

According to police, 19 of them were arrested on Monday. Among those detained, 13 were involved in looting and four in the attacks, while the roles of the remaining suspects are yet to be determined.

Police added that nine more suspects were arrested on Tuesday.

Earlier, The Daily Star filed a case accusing 350 to 400 attackers of storming its office on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue early Friday, assaulting staff, looting cash and equipment, setting several floors on fire and sabotaging safety systems.

Losses were estimated at Tk40 crore, forcing the newspaper to suspend its print edition on December 19 and halting its online services for 17 hours.

Prothom Alo also filed a case against 400 to 500 unidentified people over a similar attack at its Karwan Bazar office, alleging vandalism, looting, arson and attempts to disrupt publication.

The case was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, the Special Powers Act and the Cyber Security Ordinance. Total damages were estimated at around Tk32 crore, while looted property was valued at Tk2.5 crore.
