A total of 663 people were arrested across the country in the past 24 hours as part of Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2, aimed at controlling the law and order situation and recovering illegal firearms.

The information was confirmed on Tuesday evening by AIG (Media and PR) of Police Headquarters, AHM Shahadat Hossain.

He said that during the last 24 hours of the Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2 drive, 663 people were arrested and nine firearms were recovered. As part of routine police operations, 26,881 motorcycles and 26,573 vehicles were searched nationwide. During the searches, 342 illegal motorcycles were seized.

The special operation was decided at a meeting of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ core committee on law and order held on 13 December, following the shooting of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. At the meeting, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that ongoing operations by law enforcement agencies to recover looted and illegal weapons would be further intensified.

At the same time, the core committee decided to immediately launch Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2 with the objective of suppressing what it described as fascist militant elements.
