Amid mixed public reactions over the issue of alliance with Jamaat and NCP, Mahfuj Alam, a key figure of the July Movement and recently former adviser to the interim government, has clarified his political stance.

On Sunday night, he shared his political position in a Facebook post.

My Political Position

  • Jatiya Nagorik Committee and NCP were organized under the leadership of the forefront of the July Movement. Since my July comrades are part of these two organizations, I have, over the past one and a half years, offered advice, guidance, and policy support whenever needed.

  • My position is clear. I have spoken on many issues, such as a new political-economic settlement, cultural struggle against fascism, combating social fascism, reconciliation, and building a society of responsibility and care. These are issues my July comrades have repeatedly raised within these two organizations. But did they embrace them? I have made every effort to position NCP independently under a broad July umbrella. However, for many reasons, that has not been possible.

  • In the current reality, my respect, affection, and friendship toward my July comrades will not fade. But I am not joining this NCP. It is not true that I was not offered to be part of the Jamaat–NCP alliance. However, maintaining my long-standing position is more important than running as a candidate under the Jamaat–NCP alliance in any Dhaka constituency.

  • In this current chapter of history, Bangladesh is in a cold war. In this period, it is better to remain steadfast in one’s principles and policies without siding with any faction. The potential of alternative youth/July forces is far from over. Rather, I will continue to uphold the policies I have advocated over the past one and a half years—in political, cultural, and intellectual spheres. If you care to join me, you are most welcome.

A new political-economic settlement is possible and realistic. The rise of alternative and centrist youth/July forces is imminent.
