The Election Commission has expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the death of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

The statement was issued in a press release sent by Md Mamun Ar Rashid, deputy director of the Department of Films and Publications.

The release stated that on Bangladesh’s former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6am on Tuesday. “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.” The Election Commission expressed profound grief and sorrow over her death.

It added that Begum Khaleda Zia was an influential and important figure in Bangladesh’s democratic politics. She became the country’s first female prime minister after the restoration of parliamentary democracy in 1991 and was elected for two more terms in 1996 and 2001. Throughout her political career, she played a significant role in promoting multi-party democracy, constitutional governance, and political participation. Even as a long-time opposition leader, she remained active in parliamentary politics and contributed steadfastly to the restoration of democracy.

Her political contributions to the electoral process and the development of democratic institutions will remain memorable in Bangladesh’s history. The Election Commission prayed for the departed soul of the late Khaleda Zia and conveyed heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family, relatives, and colleagues.
