A top-listed criminal named Shahidul Islam, alias Buisya, who is accused in at least 42 cases, has been arrested in Chittagong, in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Buisya, son of Mohammad Ali of Daulatkhan upazila in Bhola district, is known as the leader of the Buisya gang. He currently lives in the West Sholashahar area under Panchlaish police station.
RAB-7 Assistant Director (Media) ARM Mozaffar Hossain said the arrest was made around 9:45 pm on Saturday during a raid at Diganta Khawaja Tower in the Finlay South City area under Chandgaon police station.
He said a pistol and nine rounds of ammunition were recovered from Buisya during the operation.
During primary interrogation, Buisya confessed to his involvement in arms trading, yaba and other drug trafficking, and extortion through a teenage gang active in the Chandgaon and Panchlaish areas.
He also admitted to operating a torture cell at his hideout in Diganta Khawaja Tower near Bahaddarhat Kacha Bazar to threaten and torture people who opposed his criminal activities.
According to RAB, Buisya has 42 cases filed against him on charges including possession of illegal arms, extortion, sabotage and drug trafficking with Chandgaon, Panchlaish and Chawkbazar police stations.
Mozaffar Hossain said criminal groups led by Buisya and Tempu have long been active in the Chandgaon area, engaging in shootings, extortion, theft and drug peddling.
He added that Ismail Hossain alias Tempu was arrested by joint forces on December 20 in connection with similar crimes.
