The International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against Awami League General Secretary and former bridges minister Obaidul Quader and seven leaders of Jubo League and Chhatra League in connection with crimes against humanity committed during the July–August violence centring on the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The order was passed by International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday, headed by its Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, after it took cognizance of the formal charges brought by the prosecution.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim represented the prosecution during the hearing.
Following the hearing, the tribunal took cognizance of the charges, issued arrest warrants against the accused and fixed December 29 as the next date for proceedings.
Earlier in the day, the prosecution submitted the formal charge before the registrar of Tribunal-2. Besides Obaidul Quader, the other accused are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and its General Secretary Wali Asif Inan.
They have been accused of incitement, conspiracy and involvement in mass killings during the July–August unrest.
