A Bangladeshi youth named Shakil Ahmed, 25, has been killed by gunfire from armed Khasias inside India at the Dhana border area of Lakhiprasad Purbo Union in the border region of Kanaighat, Sylhet.
The incident took place around 4pm on Sunday inside India, about 300 yards from the main border pillar no 1334 at the Dhana border.
According to locals, Shakil Ahmed, son of Abdur Rauf of Dhana Patichhara village near the border, along with two others, illegally entered the Dhana Khasi Punji area in India’s Meghalaya state through the Dhana border on Sunday noon to collect betel nuts.
At that time, the armed Khasias opened fire on them, and Shakil Ahmed was shot. His companions brought him back to Bangladesh while he was injured. Later, while being taken in critical condition to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, he died on the way.
An official from the Dhana BGB camp said they learned that Shakil Ahmed died on the way to Sylhet for treatment after being injured by gunfire from Indian Khasias.
Kanaighat police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Awal told Dhaka Tribune that he received information from the Dhana BGB camp about a youth named Shakil Ahmed being shot by Indian Khasias.
The OC said his autopsy will be conducted at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
