The 49th death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani was observed in Tangail through various programmes. From early Monday morning, crowds of people thronged Bhashani’s mausoleum at Santosh in Tangail. The mausoleum was covered in flowers as people paid tribute to the great leader with deep respect and affection. The shrine premises at Santosh echoed with the slogan of his countless followers and admirers: “Live on through the ages, Maulana Bhashani.” Stalls were also set up at shops around the shrine area.
The day’s programme was inaugurated at around 7:30am with the placing of floral wreaths and offering prayers at the mausoleum by Professor Dr Md Anwarul Azim Akhand, vice-chancellor of Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University. Later, members of the Bhashani family, Tangail Press Club, NAP (Bhashani), Bhashani Parishad and various institutions on the university campus also placed wreaths separately. Social and cultural organizations likewise paid their respects with floral tributes.
In the afternoon, BNP leaders, including the party’s central vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu and other central leaders, placed flowers at the mausoleum. On behalf of Gono Odhikar Parishad, party president and former DUCSU vice-president Nurul Haque Nur and central leaders paid tribute. Gonosonghoti Andolon chief coordinator Zonayed Saki, and from the National Citizen Party (NCP), senior joint chief coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud and other central leaders also laid wreaths at the shrine. Throughout the day, leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, Krishak Sramik Janata League and various other political parties were scheduled to pay their respects.
It may be noted that Maulana Bhashani passed away on 17 November 1976 while under treatment. He was later laid to rest at Santosh in Tangail.
