BNP activists allegedly vandalized the Upazila Election Office in Gopalpur of Tangail today, leaving three people, including Upazila Election Officer Mohammad Nazrul Islam, injured.

Data entry operator Amjad Hossain and scanning operator Sumon were also hurt during the incident, which occurred in the morning.

Following the incident, the District Election Officer and the Superintendent of Police visited the spot in the afternoon.

According to election office sources, a group of 30-40 BNP activists suddenly entered the office and assaulted the election officer. Two other staff members also came under the attack. The office was vandalized, and important documents were torn apart. Meanwhile, around a hundred party members remained outside the premises.

Assistant Upazila Election Officer Abu Raihan confirmed the incident, stating that the attack may have been prompted by the office’s refusal to grant favors to certain intermediaries.

Senior District Election Officer Mohammad Tajul Islam said he was present at the scene, adding that the matter would be reported to higher authorities. A case would be filed with the police station in connection with the attack on government property and officials.

Upazila BNP General Secretary Kazi Liaqat alleged that the election officer was involved in misconduct and corruption, claiming their visit was to address grievances. District Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman stated that formal complaints about any allegations should be lodged with the police station.
