An eight-year-old boy named Sohan was killed after being hit by a truck in the capital’s Uttara area.
Three other members of the same family, including another child, were critically injured in the incident.
The accident occurred around 6:30am on Saturday at the slope of the flyover opposite the BNS Center under Uttara East Police Station.
The deceased, Sohan, was the younger of two sons of Ronak Hassan from Polghat village in Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.
According to family members and police sources, the family was waiting for transport by the roadside at the slope of the Uttara flyover. At that time, a speeding bus and a truck were racing against each other when the truck driver lost control and plowed into them.
Sohan, his elder brother Rohan, mother Tahurun Nesa, and maternal grandmother Abejan Begum were thrown onto the road and severely injured.
Locals rescued them and first took them to Kuwait Maitree Hospital. From there, Rohan and his grandmother were shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR/Pangu Hospital).
Meanwhile, Sohan and his mother were brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition at around 11am, where the attending physician declared Sohan dead. His mother is currently undergoing treatment at DMCH.
Following the accident, locals seized the killer truck. Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, stated that the child’s body has been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy. The concerned Uttara East Police Station has been informed, and legal proceedings are underway.
