Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), several DU-based student organizations, and supporters of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Osman Hadi have staged a sit-in at Shahbagh in the capital, demanding justice for those responsible for his killing.
Protests began Thursday night, shortly after news of Hadi’s death spread. Ducsu, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti—the student wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP)—and the Anti-Dominance Students’ Collective later joined the demonstration.
Eyewitnesses said protesters gathered in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture, chanting slogans demanding punishment for Hadi’s killers. Barricades were set up on both sides of the road to strengthen security, though traffic on nearby roads around Shahbagh remained normal. Police have been on alert to maintain order.
Doctors at Singapore General Hospital declared Osman Hadi dead at 9:45pm Bangladesh time Thursday, according to Saeed Hasan, convener of Inqilab Mancha’s DU unit.
Hadi was shot on December 12 in the Box Culvert Road area of Purana Paltan, leaving him critically injured. He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for surgery and later admitted to Evercare Hospital for advanced treatment.
On Monday afternoon, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance under government supervision.
