The lifetime membership granted to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power in a student-mass uprising in 2024, has been cancelled by the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu).
Ducsu VP Abu Shadik Kayem confirmed this decision at a press conference following the conclusion of Ducsu’s second general meeting on Wednesday night.
He said: “The granting of lifetime membership to Hasina was illegal and beyond Ducsu’s constitution. She was given this undemocratically through a resolution in 2019. Today’s (Wednesday’s) meeting has decided to cancel that resolution.’
The meeting was chaired by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor and Ducsu President Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan.
Ducsu’s VP, GS, AGS, and members of the full executive council were present at the meeting.
