AB Zubair, the Social Welfare Secretary of Ducsu (Dhaka University Central Students’ Union), harrassed Professor AKM Jamal from Dhaka University’s Sociology Department, a known supporter of the pro-Awami League Neel Dal (Blue Party), at the Social Sciences Faculty building.

Professor Zeenat Huda from the same department was also present during the incident.

The confrontation occurred around 2pm on Thursday and after video footage of the incident went viral on social media, it sparked widespread discussion and criticism across campus.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune about the incident, Professor AKM Jamal said such “mob action and harassment” of teachers was “unprecedented” in Dhaka University’s history. “We’ve been to the Social Sciences Faculty many times before without any issues. Why did this happen today?”

When asked about the incident, AB Zubair told Dhaka Tribune: “Five fascist collaborator teachers, including Awami League cronies AKM Jamal and Zeenat Huda—who called for brush-firing these self-proclaimed razakars’ children—were attending a secret meeting on campus today. We got wind of it and tried to apprehend them, but unfortunately they managed to escape.”

In the viral video, Ducsu leader AB Zubair can be seen trying to detain Professor AKM Jamal on the Social Sciences Faculty stairs with the intention of handing him over to police. When the professor attempted to flee, Jubayer grabbed his hoodie and pulled it, causing the hoodie to come off. The professor then quickly ran down the stairs and tried to get into a car. Jubayer attempted to stop him by holding the car door, but was unsuccessful and Professor Jamal left the campus in the vehicle.
