In a joint operation by the Fisheries Department and Coast Guard Hijla station in the Patti canal of the Meghna River under Hijla Upazila of Barisal district seized banned 6 Behundi nets and 6,000 poles used to encircle the nets on Tuesday.
The seized items were later burned, said Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Alam.
Hijla Upazila Fisheries Office sources said Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Mohammad Alam and Coast Guard Hijla Contingent Commander Kajal Kumar Nath conducted a joint operation in the Meghna River, from Harinathpur to Patti canal in Hijla Upazila.
During the operation banned six Behundi nets recovered and 6000 poles used for spreading nets were recovered and seized.
Two of the six trawlers manage to escape, while the remaining four trawlers were seized.
The value of these nets is about 8 lakh taka.
Later, the nets and poles were brought to the shore and burned.
The Upazila Fisheries Officer said that as fishermen catch Jatka(hilsa fries) with these banned nets, the small fishes of different varieties are killed.
As a result, the fish diversity of the rivers and canals is destroyed and the river fisheries are empty.
