Bangladesh will send another formal letter to India requesting the repatriation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, following her death sentence by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity, said Dr Asif Nazrul, adviser to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Monday, Dr Nazrul said: “Another letter will be sent to India, urging them to return Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh. If India continues to provide her shelter, it should understand that such an act is hostile and condemnable toward Bangladesh and its people.”
Describing the verdict as a historic milestone, he added: “Today (Monday), justice has been upheld on the soil of Bangladesh. This is a historic day. InshaAllah, as long as we are here, the judicial process will continue. I hope that any future government will not shy away from this responsibility.”
Referring to the victims of the July uprising last year, Dr Nazrul said: “Hundreds were killed and thousands seriously injured or maimed during the movement. The person responsible for their suffering—Sheikh Hasina—has now been sentenced to death. Her chief associate, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, has also received the death penalty.”
