The Inqilab Mancha issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government for the arrest of Hadi’s killers, after thousands of people gathered at Dhaka’s Shahbagh intersection this Saturday afternoon following the funeral prayers for Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha and one of the key leaders of the July mass uprising.
After Osman Hadi’s burial on Saturday afternoon, Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of the organization, took position at Shahbagh intersection and stated that if no response comes from the government regarding the arrest of Sharif Osman Hadi’s killers by 5:15pm on Sunday, they will stage another sit-in at Shahbagh.
At that time, those present chanted various slogans including “Inqilab, Inqilab—Zindabad Zindabad”, “Not Delhi, Dhaka—Dhaka, Dhaka”.
They also demanded that Shahbagh intersection be renamed “Hadi Chottor”.
Earlier, people began gathering at Shahbagh intersection from around 3:30pm onwards. At that time, vehicular movement came to a halt there. After Hadi’s burial, around 4:30pm, the gathering at Shahbagh grew larger. This created severe traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.
Many people were seen performing Asr prayers there.
Prior to this, Osman Hadi’s funeral prayers were held at 2:30pm at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building. After the funeral prayers concluded, he was buried beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam near the Dhaka University Central Mosque.
Sharif Osman Hadi, a parliamentary candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming national election, was critically injured in a shooting by criminals in Dhaka’s Paltan area on December 12.
He was subsequently treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Evercare Hospital. When his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Singapore for advanced treatment on Monday.
He passed away on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital. His body arrived in the country on Friday.
