India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar left Dhaka after paying his final respects to former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

He departed on a special Indian Air Force flight just before evening on Wednesday.

During his brief visit of just a few hours, he expressed condolences to the bereaved family of the former prime minister and delivered a special message from India’s prime minister.

According to sources at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Jaishankar left the city around 5pm.

During the short visit, he met BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, expressing deep condolences and presenting a personal letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also conveyed India’s heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the Indian government and people.

While in Dhaka, Jaishankar met with Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman of the interim government.

He also exchanged greetings with Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Speaker of the Parliament of Pakistan, and several other South Asian ministers who had come to pay tribute to Khaleda Zia.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, Jaishankar became the first Indian minister to visit Dhaka.
