A writ has been filed in the High Court seeking increased security for lower court judges at all court premises and their residences across the country.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ in the relevant branch of the High Court on Sunday. He said the writ may be heard this week by a High Court bench led by Justice Shikdar Md Mahmudur Razi.
The writ names the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Secretary of the Ministry of Law, and other relevant officials as respondents.
Earlier, on Thursday, Limon Mia, a resident of Fulchhari, Gaibandha, went to the residence of the judge in Terkhadia, Dabtala, Rajshahi. He then stabbed and strangled the judge’s 15-year-old son, Tausif Rahman, to death. The judge’s wife, Tasmin Nahar Lusio was also injured in the attack. During the commotion, Limon was also injured and later hospitalized. On Friday, Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman filed a murder case at Rajpara Police Station naming Limon Mia as the sole accused. The court approved a five-day remand for Limon in this case.
In this incident, the Bangladesh Judicial Service Association demanded strict action against police officers involved in negligence in ensuring the judge’s security and unprofessionally presenting the arrested suspect to the media. The association warned that if these two demands were not met within 48 hours, judges across the country would observe a pen strike starting Sunday.
Later, on Saturday, after assurances to deploy sufficient security personnel at all courts, judges’ residences, and during their travel, the association withdrew the pen strike. However, in response to the murder of the judge’s son in Rajshahi, judges across the country wore black badges and held prayer gatherings on Sunday.
