Teachers of Kotalipara Government Adarsha College belonging to the BCS General Education Cadre began a two-day work abstention yesterday, demanding promotion.

The teachers went to the college, but refrained from taking classes.

Due to the work stoppage, college principal Professor Dr Md Enayet Bari issued a notice, postponing class test (CT-1) of year 11 scheduled for 16 and 17 November and pre-test exam of year 12.

Sajib, a year 11 student of the college said, “We were supposed to sit for our CT-1 exam today. After coming to the college, we came to know through a notice that exams scheduled for Sunday and Monday have been postponed. The new timetable will be announced later.”

Dipak Ballav, a teacher at Accounting Department said, “I joined the education cadre as a lecturer through the 35th BCS exam, yet I am still in the same position. Meanwhile, officers of other cadres have got promotion long ago. The BCS General Education Association has been waging a movement to press home its four-point demand, including holding of the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) meeting, issuance of a government order on promotion to all deprived lecturers up to 37th batch, and creation of supernumerary posts.”

“As part of this programme, we will observe work abstention on Sunday and Monday,” he added.

Principal Professor Dr Md Enayet Bari said, “In other BCS cadres, promotions are given on regular basis, but a teacher appointed as a lecturer has been deprived of promotion for 10-13 years. The movement of the BCS General Education Association is logical and we show our solidarity with them. That is why all classes have been suspended today (Sunday) and tomorrow (Monday), and several examinations have also been postponed. We hope the government will take necessary steps to resolve the issue immediately.”
