A lawyer was beaten to death after his private car hit a motorcycle in the Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital on Wednesday night.

The victim, Naeem Kibria 35, was a lawyer at the Pabna District Judge’s Court.

According to Vatara Police Station Sub-Inspector Ariful Islam, the incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. when Naeem, who was driving a private car, collided with a motorcycle. Following the collision, the motorcyclist and several local youths allegedly became enraged, dragged Naeem out of the vehicle, and beat him indiscriminately before fleeing, leaving him unconscious on the road.

Naeem was rescued by his cousin, Rafiqul Islam, and taken to Kurmitola General Hospital around 11:00 p.m., where doctors declared him dead. Police said injury marks were found on various parts of his body, including the neck, arms, and back.

Family members said Naeem was the son of Golam Kibria of Chak Joyenpur village in Pabna Sadar upazila. His mother, Irene Kibria, is a former panel chairperson of the Pabna Zila Parishad.

They said that following the anti-discrimination student movement, a political case was filed against Naeem in Pabna, prompting him to come to Dhaka to avoid arrest. He had been staying at a relative’s house in Purbachal and had come to the capital to consult lawyers about seeking bail from the High Court.

Rafiqul Islam said Naeem came to his house in Purbachal 10 days ago and went out on Wednesday night using a friend’s private car. He said he received a call from Naeem’s phone during the incident but could only hear commotion and shouting. Later, he learned from a security guard that Naeem had been rescued and taken to the hospital.

Police sent the body to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue on Thursday morning for an autopsy. Vatara police said they are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the attackers and that the process of filing a murder case is underway.
