Police have arrested the main suspect at Rahimapur Chakla village in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur in connection with the killing of freedom fighter Jogesh Chandra Barman and his wife Subarna Rani. The couple was killed with their throats slit. The weapons used in the attack—a hatchet and a knife—have also been recovered.

The arrested suspect, Morsalin, was taken into custody from his home in Khiyarer Jumma village under Alampur, Taraganj. Police identified him using clues from a pair of sandals left at the crime scene. During police questioning, Morsalin reportedly admitted to being directly involved in the murders.

He gave a confessional statement in the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Jannatun Nesha under Section 164 on Friday afternoon. According to police, the motive was money.

After his arrest, police took Morsalin to a nearby canal where he showed officers the location where the hatchet and knife had been thrown. With help from local residents, both weapons were recovered from under the water.

Rangpur’s Superintendent of Police supervised the weapon recovery operation and later briefed the media. He stated that police conducted extensive operations after the December 6 killings and managed to identify and arrest the prime suspect within six days. During interrogation, Morsalin confessed and said he killed the couple for money, though he claimed he did not find any cash after breaking into their cabinet. The SP added that investigators are still looking into all details.

The SP confirmed that, based on current findings, Morsalin was involved in the murders, but further investigation continues.

On December 6, police recovered the bodies of the freedom fighter couple from their home. Their son Shovon filed a murder case with Taraganj Police Station against unidentified suspects.
