A violent clash broke out between students of Dhaka University and Dhaka College around midnight on Monday in the capital’s Nilkhet and New Market areas, reportedly triggered by a dispute over the setup of makeshift shops near Shahnewaz Hall.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the confrontation escalated into chasing and counter-chasing, with both groups hurling brickbats and turning the area into a virtual battleground.
The situation prompted the rapid deployment of police personnel to restore order.
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice President Shadiq Kayem, along with other student leaders, rushed to the scene in an attempt to de-escalate tensions.
Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Jahangir of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s New Market Zone confirmed that the altercation stemmed from a dispute over footpath encroachments.
“Chasing and counter-chasing took place between students of Dhaka University and Dhaka College. Police later dispersed both sides,” he said.
He added that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the clash and that legal action will be taken if necessary.
No injuries were reported at the time of filing.
