Two children from the coastal district of Satkhira — Nausheen Islam and Nur Ahmed Jidan — will represent Bangladesh at the COP-30 Global Climate Conference to be held in Belém, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November. They will leave for Brazil on 11 November.
More than 12,000 climate activists from around 150 countries will attend the event. Nausheen and Jidan will share the realities faced by children in Bangladesh’s coastal areas who are suffering from the severe impacts of climate change.
Nausheen, president of the Ashashuni Upazila Children’s Forum, has been working for several years on child protection, environmental issues, and climate awareness. She is an eighth-grade student at Protappur United Academy and the daughter of teacher Md Shahidul Islam and Jesmin of Protappur village.
Jidan, also in class eight, studies at Sundarban Secondary School in Munshiganj union of Shyamnagar upazila. He is the son of GM Roisuzzaman and Mosammat Layeka Khanom of Jatindranagar village.
Both are attending COP-30 with the support of Jagorito Jubo Sangha (JJS), the Children’s Forum on Climate Change and DRR, and KNH-BMZ.
Nausheen said she will highlight the struggles of coastal children and urge world leaders to ensure their rights to education, nutrition, and health. Jidan added that climate change is turning Satkhira’s coast into an unliveable place and called on developed nations to take responsibility and compensate affected children.
